How To Handle Objections and Rejections In Evangelism

The more gospel conversations you have, the greater the likelihood that people will object to or reject the message. Believers must maintain a balanced approach—avoiding discouragement in the face of objections and rejection, while keeping a heart that grieves lostness and refuses to give up on their souls.

12 principles believers can practice to navigate these obstacles effectively:

  1. Be patient. Some people you speak with may be rude or difficult, but this is no excuse to repay evil for evil. Remember your motivation: this is what Christ has commanded. You can be patient with their objections because God was patient with you.
  2.
  3. Be observant. Don't aim to win an argument for the sake of winning. Truly listen and process the points they are making. They may not realize where their worldview fails, and you won't either unless you carefully listen.
  4.
  5. Be detailed. Provide thoughtful, thorough responses to their objections. The Christian faith is coherent and logical. Demonstrate that logical consistency by addressing their core beliefs in an orderly, clear manner.
  6.
  7. Be biblical. Speak where Scripture speaks, making it the primary foundation for your answers. The Word of God is far more powerful than any human argument, so grounding your responses in Scripture is always best—even when your listener doesn't yet accept its authority.
  8.
  9. Be diligent. Continually study and learn about different worldviews. You won't have every answer, but don't let that stop you from sharing the gospel. If you encounter an objection you can't answer, be honest, let them know you will research it, and follow up. Someone else has likely wrestled with that exact question.
  10.
  11. Be disciplined. Never assume you know everything or that you no longer need to grow. Evangelism requires ongoing practice. Every individual brings a unique background, set of beliefs, and life experiences. Keep honing your ability to engage in constructive dialogue. If a conversation didn't go as planned, follow up later or address it next time. When you share regularly, there will always be a next time.
  12.
  13. Be prayerful. Maintain a posture of prayer before, during, and after every gospel conversation. Crucially, entrust those who reject the message to God, knowing He will do what is right. Let them know you will be praying for them—and be faithful to do so.
  14.
  15. Be gracious. Ensure they know you love them and are extending grace. Avoid sharp or defensive responses that might give them reason to further reject the gospel. Instead, let them see God's grace reflected in your demeanor and words.
  16.
  17. Be bountiful. Let your sincerity and genuine care be evident. Even if they reject your message, extend generous love through your words and actions, mirroring the abundant love Christ has shown to us.
  18.
  19. Be joyful. Do not allow a negative response to steal your joy. God is at work. While rejection of Christ brings genuine grief, your very next conversation could be the means God uses to draw a soul to Himself. Let your joy shine, knowing God is still saving sinners—just as He did with us.
  20.
  21. Be hopeful. You never know how the Spirit will work through a conversation, especially one marked by Christlike humility. Always leave the door open by letting them know you would welcome future conversations whenever they are open to talking again.
  22.
  23. Be faithful. Conversion is not your responsibility—it is the work of the Holy Spirit. Your calling is simply to share the gospel message faithfully and trust the Lord with the results.
  24.

Never forget that we have all objected to and rejected the gospel at one time in our life. We weren't born loving the message of the gospel that we needed to lay down our rebellious arms. We can be patient, observant, detailed, biblical, diligent, disciplined, prayerful, graceful, bountiful, joyful, hopeful, and faithful because this is how Christ was to us. We can look to the Spirit to work, knowing that if we've been faithful, we can leave the results to him. Be faithful.
